The student discount applies to people studying full-time at upper secondary schools, universities, university colleges and equivalent educational institutions that qualify for financial support from the Norwegian State Educational Loan Fund. Norwegian students studying abroad are also covered by this scheme. The student discount is also given to full-time apprentices and trainees, based on the definition in chapter four of the Education Act, whose goal is ordinary education, and who do not receive pay or other remuneration in connection with their education. The exception is apprentices/trainees who are given a discount during their apprenticeship/traineeship. Grants and student trust funds are not considered pay. If you are under 21, it pays to buy a 30-day youth ticket instead.

The study programme must have a duration of at least three months, and for higher education, the study programme must be equivalent to 30 credits or more per semester. For upper secondary school, the student work load must be a full-year course (upper secondary level 1, 2 or 3) or equivalent. If a student takes longer than normal to complete a course or he/she does not follow the teaching in all subjects, he/she will be deemed to be a part-time student and will not qualify for a discount.

Discounts are only given to students participating in ordinary education, not specialist courses or internships. Adult non-native speakers under the age of 33 taking part in the 'Norwegian language and social studies' course are nonetheless entitled to a discount.

Part-time upper secondary school pupils/visiting trainees and adults who are also in full-time work do not come under the student discount scheme. The scheme does not apply to government agency schools (under the Armed Forces, Post Norway, the Norwegian Correctional Service), correspondence schools and short-term evening courses.
