Universal design

During our lives, most of us experience some form of impediment, both short and long-term.  Examples include injury in a car accident, a baby in a pram, old age or pregnancy. What these impediments, and many more, have in common is that we find it difficult to get from A to Z.

So when we talk about universal design for public transport, we mean that buses and boats, bus stops and sales offices have to be planned and laid out to allow absolutely everyone, as far as possible, to get from one place to another unaided.

The National Transport Plan 2010-2019 has allocated NOK 1 billion to the upgrade of travel hubs, terminals, bus stops and ranks on the national road network. 1,500 of a total 6,500 bus stops on the road network are to be upgraded to the required standard from 2010 to 2019. Bus stops with the highest number of passengers will be first on the list for upgrade. In addition, about 100 public transport hubs will be upgraded to the required standard.
